During her tenure as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, she was actively involved in promoting the so-called reproductive and sexual rights, which include, among other things, abortion \u2014at least in the eyes of the abortion lobby, which for years has been using the concept of \u201csexual and reproductive health and rights\u201d to try to sneak the so-called right to abortion into international law.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2022\/06\/bachelet-us-ruling-dobbs-v-jackson-womens-health-organization\">In 2022, she claimed<\/a>: \u201cAccess to safe, legal, and effective abortion is firmly rooted in international human rights law and is at the core of women\u2019s and girls\u2019 autonomy and ability to make their own choices about their bodies and lives, free of discrimination, violence, and coercion.\u201d During a recent press conference <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/80\/2026\/04\/16\/press-release-interactive-dialogues-with-secretary-general-candidates-a-pivotal-moment-in-selecting-uns-next-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after the hearing<\/a> before the General Assembly, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FridayFax\/status\/2047814683248226536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">she announced<\/a> that, while serving as Secretary-General, she would push for the right to abortion on demand up to birth, emphasizing the need to implement the decisions of the CEDAW Committee. This UN body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/hrbodies\/cedaw\/statements\/CEDAW-Statement-International-Day-Girl-Child%202023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is calling for<\/a> the decriminalization of abortion in all cases, its public funding, and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.un.org\/en\/CEDAW\/C\/LKA\/CO\/9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">access for transgender people<\/a>\u2014including children\u2014to gender-transition procedures and privileges associated with their preferred identity. A group of 28 American congressmen and senators from the Republican Party <a href=\"https:\/\/chrissmith.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=415390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/a>, in which they strongly <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/devex\/status\/2039185184059240805\">oppose<\/a> the candidacy of Michelle Bachelet for the position of UN Secretary-General. The petition\u2019s authors argue that Bachelet is an &#8220;unsuitable candidate,&#8221; calling her a &#8220;pro-abortion zealot&#8221; who uses her political influence to push radical agendas and undermine the sovereignty of states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devex.com\/news\/us-republican-lawmakers-ask-rubio-to-block-michelle-bachelet-s-un-bid-112200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Republicans point to two main areas of concern<\/a>. Additionally, questions are arising about her ability to maintain a balance between different blocs of states amid growing geopolitical tensions. The Secretary-General, to perform his or her duties effectively, must be seen as someone capable of mediating and forging compromises, which in practice means the need to exercise great caution in politically sensitive matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The beginning of the electoral process and its significance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/sg-selection-and-appointment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selection process<\/a> for the new Secretary-General of the United Nations for the term beginning on January 1, 2027, formally began in 2025, with the launch of the nomination process and the organization of public hearings in New York. In line with the UN\u2019s established practice, the culmination of the process is expected in the second half of 2026, when the Security Council should select a single candidate and present that candidate to the General Assembly for approval. Even at this stage, however, it is clear that this choice\u2014though formally based on certain principles of international law\u2014is primarily political in nature and the result of negotiations among the world\u2019s largest countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The post of the United Nations Secretary-General is one of the most important positions in the international system.
