On May 22, the Minister of the Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński, signed a regulation enabling the transcription of records of same-sex “marriages: entered into in another country. Some local government officials (including the mayor of Zakopane) have already announced that they will not transcribe such records, on the grounds that the ministerial regulation is contrary to Polish law. The Polish Bishops’ Conference (KEP) also expressed its support for local government officials defending the constitutional understanding of marriage. On its behalf, the position on this matter was announced by Bishop Andrzej Jeż—Delegate of the KEP for the Pastoral Care of Local Government Officials and Administrative Employees.
The Ordo Iuris Institute also points out that the regulation is contrary to the constitutional principle of the protection of marriage. Therefore, it offers free legal assistance to all local government officials who will face negative consequences for refusing to enter a foreign certificate of a same-sex “marriage” into official records. On June 8, Ordo Iuris will also publish a guide for local government officials on possible measures in response to attempts to compel the rewriting of such acts. On June 10, the Institute will hold an online training session for representatives of local government units. More information coming soon.
