Six years ago, Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal (CT) unequivocally confirmed that a law allowing sick unborn children to be killed by abortion is contrary to the Constitution. Six years later, it turns out that Poland is retreating on the path of defending the weakest. The Sejm, Poland’s lower house of parliament, marked the anniversary of the CT ruling by passing two bills that… throw the door wide open to the mass killing of defenseless children in their mothers’ wombs.

The Sejm has passed two acts striking at the lives of unborn Poles

That ruling was a major event for the entire pro-life movement worldwide. It ended an era of barbaric eugenic practices in Polish hospitals. It was cited even by defenders of life in the United States, who two years later won a similar victory in their own Supreme Court. Six years later, it turns out that Poland is retreating on the path of defending the weakest. Our fight in defense of life is starting anew. The government’s unlawful actions over the past two years have led to a dramatic increase in the number of abortions in Polish hospitals, and the Sejm marked the anniversary of the CT ruling by passing two bills that… throw the door wide open to the mass killing of defenseless children in their mothers’ wombs.

One of the acts abolishes criminal liability for aiding and abetting abortion. The other reinstates eugenic abortion. The first leads to the unrestricted killing of children – without any oversight and at the abortionists’ sole discretion; to the growth of a death industry, the murder of the unborn up to the final moments of pregnancy, and even the killing of children as they are being born. The second allows the cold-blooded elimination of children with Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and any other congenital disease; the growth of private abortion clinics, and even mobile units for killing the unborn! Both acts are contrary to the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and ostentatiously ignore the Constitutional Tribunal’s long-standing case law. Their entry into force would mean the full legalization of the unrestricted killing of unborn children. Up to the very last moment.

The surprising absence of some right-wing MPs

During last week’s vote, we could not count on some opposition MPs, who lacked the courage to oppose lawlessness with one voice. Particularly conspicuous was the absence of Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński and Confederation leader Sławomir Mentzen. In the case of the 11 absent Law and Justice (PiS) MPs (and of MP Joanna Lichocka, who abstained), it is puzzling: even if they are not great defenders of life, they ought to stand firmly behind the rulings of the Constitutional Tribunal, which they so readily rally to defend.

The votes of the absent MPs decided the passage of the full decriminalization of abortion, as the bill was adopted by a margin of… four votes. Politicians must know that we are watching them closely and will remember how they acted. We will include the results of both votes in the Ordo Iuris Parliamentary Lighthouse (Latarnik Parlamentarny), so that ahead of the 2027 elections every Pole can check politicians’ declarations against their actual conduct.

We appeal to President Karol Nawrocki for a veto

Fortunately, all is not yet lost. We can still block these barbaric acts by persuading President Nawrocki to veto them. We have grounds to hope that the head of state will side with life, since Karol Nawrocki has declared several times so far that he will defend unborn children from the hell of abortion. But in the coming days, the President will be under enormous pressure.

A few days ago, pro-abortion protests took place. To help boost turnout, Poland’s public television (“in liquidation”) invited the “Abortion Dream Team” on air – the very same group that boasts of illegally helping to kill unborn children. We must show the President that Poles are pro-life and expect him to courageously oppose the barbarity of abortion. The lives of thousands of Polish children now depend on Karol Nawrocki. I believe the President will rise to the occasion.

Ordo Iuris experts will submit detailed, critical analyses of the pro-abortion acts to the Chancellery of the President. The argument of their flagrant unconstitutionality alone is sufficient for the President, as guardian of the Constitution, to refuse to sign them. But we will also deliver to the President an appeal for a veto, backed by thousands of Poles, which anyone can sign by visiting niedlaaborcji.pl.

Ordo Iuris continues its fight against the abortion lobby

At the same time, we are fighting abortion on other fronts. We continue to seek exemplary punishment for abortion activists, whom the government is now shielding with a protective umbrella. Nevertheless, we do not let up in our fight for justice and respect for the law. We recently filed notifications with the prosecutor’s office concerning the “abortomat” (an abortion-pill vending machine) at the Abortion Dream Team’s premises in Warsaw. We have also demanded the prosecution, for promoting and paying for abortion, of the Deputy Speaker of Poland’s Senate, Magdalena Biejat, who boasted on social media of her support for abortion activists.

Following our intervention, the Regional Court in Warsaw ordered the prosecutor’s office to continue the case concerning illegal abortions performed at the “AboTak” abortion clinic. We achieved a similar success in the case of the so-called abortion couriers, who distribute abortifacients in Poland as part of the organization “Aborcja Polska Kurierki ProAbo.” The Regional Court in Warsaw ordered an investigation to be conducted in this case. Earlier, we secured the conviction by a first-instance court of Abortion Dream Team activist Justyna W. for aiding and abetting abortion. We also recently submitted to the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland the signatures under the petition “Mr. President, Stop Abortion!”, in which we call on the head of state to refer the Ministry of Health’s abortion guidelines to the Constitutional Tribunal. Once a month, we take part in prayer gatherings outside the “abortion clinic,” organized by the Center for Life and Family. The most recent such public prayer took place last week. Added to this is the defense in court of pro-life volunteers prosecuted for showing the truth about abortion on the streets of Polish cities, published guides for doctors and hospitals, the defense of the conscience clause, reports, media appearances, social media content, and the defense of life at the UN and in the EU.

Our work in defense of life is comprehensive, consistent and unrelenting.
